The port is convenient, but the villages are the magic. An honest comparison — from a host who lives here.
Staying in Chora — when it makes sense
Chora (Tinos Town) is where the ferry lands, and for one night before an early boat it is the practical choice: everything on foot, plenty of services, the harbour front for dinner. The trade-offs are real, though — summer traffic, cruise-day crowds, and around the great pilgrimage of 15 August the town books out and the streets fill shoulder to shoulder. It feels more town than island.
The balcony villages — where we would stay
On the slopes of Kechrovouni at about 380 m, Dyo Choria and Triantaros look out over Mykonos, Delos and Syros — quiet, walkable, full of tavernas, and only fifteen minutes by car from the port. This is the Tinos of marble lanes, plane-tree squares and spring-fed fountains; the evenings belong to neighbours, not queues.
We are biased — all four of our freshly renovated houses are in these two villages — but that is also why we can promise the practical bits: free parking near the houses, luggage help on the marble steps, and a host who answers within the hour.
Other corners people ask about
Pyrgos and the north are the marble country — gorgeous, artistic, and a solid 35–40 minutes from the port, which is fine if sculpture is your trip’s heart. Beach bases like Kionia or Agios Romanos put the sea at your door, but you will still drive for tavernas and villages. Both work; neither gives you the village evenings that make Tinos, Tinos.
Villages vs Chora, honestly
Choose Chora for nightlife, services and ferry-morning ease. Choose the villages for views, quiet, character and value — knowing the port is only fifteen minutes away by car. If you want the island more than the town, it is not a close call: base yourself high, drive down when you need to.
