Easter on Tinos

Greece’s pilgrimage island keeps one of the country’s most moving Easters — and in 2027 it falls on May 2, in the warmest spring weeks.

Tinos is the island Greeks cross the sea for. The church of Panagia Evangelistria above the harbour is the country’s great pilgrimage shrine, and Holy Week here is lived, not staged: bells across the valleys, chanting drifting from every village church, the Epitaphios processions winding through marble lanes by candlelight on Good Friday, and the midnight of the Resurrection breaking into fireworks and feasting.

And here is the quiet secret: at Easter the island belongs to Greek families, not tour groups. As a guest in a village house you are inside the real thing — our neighbours will hand you a candle and expect you at the table.

Holy Week in the villages

In Triantaros and Dyo Choria the week builds day by day: churches dressed in flowers, the smell of baking tsoureki in the lanes, children carrying lambades. On Good Friday evening each village follows its flower-covered Epitaphios through the lanes; on Saturday night the squares empty into the churches and, at midnight, light passes candle to candle until the whole village glows. Sunday is lamb, wine and long tables — and if you are here, you will not eat alone.

The great church in Chora, fifteen minutes away, holds the island’s largest services — with the Annunciation (March 25) and the summer feasts, it is one of the four great pilgrimage moments of the Tinos year.

Easter 2027: the late, warm one

Orthodox Easter 2027 falls on Sunday, May 2 — about as late (and as warm) as Greek Easter gets, a full five weeks after Western Easter. Expect spring at its peak: 18–22°C days, green hillsides, wildflowers on every terrace wall — and the Food Paths festival only days later in mid-May. Easter plus the festival makes a ten-day spring stay we would happily design for you.

Practical, from your hosts

Ferries from Rafina run all year and add sailings around the holiday; Easter week is the one spring week Greek families book months ahead — reserve early. Evenings are still cool in the villages; tell us your dates and the house will be warm when you arrive. As always, direct guests get our best rate.

Easter on Tinos — FAQ

When is Greek Easter in 2027?

Orthodox Easter Sunday is May 2, 2027 — five weeks after Western Easter (March 28). Holy Week on Tinos runs from April 26; the Good Friday processions are on April 30.

What actually happens during Easter on Tinos?

Candle-lit Epitaphios processions through the village lanes on Good Friday, the midnight Resurrection service with fireworks over Chora, and Easter Sunday feasts of lamb in every square and courtyard. The pilgrimage church of Panagia Evangelistria holds the island’s largest services.

Is it warm at Easter?

In 2027, with Easter on May 2, expect real spring: days around 18–22°C, cool evenings, the first swims for the brave. We prepare the houses for the season with warm bedding — and the ovens work hard that week.

Do we need to book early for Easter?

Yes — genuinely. Easter on Tinos is the one spring week when Greek families fill the island. For Easter 2027 (May 2), we recommend reserving by autumn 2026.

Can non-Orthodox visitors join the celebrations?

Warmly, yes. The processions fill the public lanes, everyone holds a candle at midnight, and village tables have a way of growing chairs. Come respectful and curious; you will be looked after.
