Winter on Tinos 2026-27: Long Weekends and Monthly Stays in Village Houses
From November to March the villages run on their own clock again. Heated stone houses, empty trails, the island’s own feasts, and a long-stay rate for those who come to live and work.
From November until Easter, Tinos goes back to the eight and a half thousand or so people who live here all year. In Dyo Choria and Triantaros the day runs on the kafeneio, the school bus, the church bell and the north wind. It is not a season for everyone, so we tell you exactly what it is like.
Winter here is mild by any northern standard: daytime temperatures of around 13 to 15°C in January and February. Somewhere around the middle of January come the halcyon days, a run of still, warm, cloudless days when you eat lunch outside in your shirtsleeves with Mykonos and Delos sharp on the horizon.
Why winter in the villages
From February the hills turn an improbable green and the dry-stone terraces fill with anemones. It is the best walking weather of the year: the island’s old footpaths, more than 150 km of marble-slabbed mule tracks linking the villages, are empty and cool. Panagia Evangelistria is open every day of the year, so is the convent of Kechrovouni above our villages, and Volax, Pyrgos and the dovecote valleys are yours alone.
Village kitchens follow the season too: the louza and the winter sausages are made after the pig slaughter in December, and kafeneio pots hold wild greens, fennel pies, slow-cooked goat and bean soup.
Winter long weekends 2026-27
- Christmas: Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December 2026, a three-day weekend.
- New Year: New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027, another long weekend. On 6 January, Epiphany, the priest throws the cross into the harbour and the young men of Chora dive for it.
- 30 January 2027 (Saturday): the island’s own great day, the anniversary of the finding of the icon of the Evangelistria in 1823, with the procession through Chora at two in the afternoon.
- Clean Monday: Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March 2027, with kites over the beaches.
- 25 March: the Annunciation, the great feast of Panagia Evangelistria and Greece’s national day. In 2027 it is a Thursday, so the long weekend runs from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 March.

Honest notes on winter
Tinos has no airport. The conventional ferries keep running all year, roughly one sailing a day from Rafina and a few a week from Piraeus, while the fast catamarans are mostly tied up until spring. When a gale warning is issued the ferries stay in harbour, sometimes for a whole day, so never book a flight home for the morning after your last night. If a ferry is cancelled by weather, we move your dates for free.
The beach tavernas close by the end of October and many shops in Chora shutter soon after. What remains is the island that works: harbour cafés and a handful of tavernas in Chora, the bakeries, the kafeneio in each village. You will want a car. And winter is wet by Cycladic standards, with roughly a dozen days of rain a month, usually a front that passes in a night.
Our houses in winter
All three houses we let for holidays are heated and open through the winter: Emerald View House One in Dyo Choria, steps from the plane-tree square, and Aegean Selfie House and Blue Horizon in Triantaros.
